It's called WINNING, that's why we love RACING!

The hunger and desire for a championship is always present. When you get to end of the season but their is still one large task ahead before it is settled at the BAJA 1000. This was the case for our team as going into the 1000 we had a 4 point lead, which pretty much meant that we were tied with a very talented team of Mike Johnson. In other words or to put it simply whom ever won the 1000 would win the season championship no pressure right!
In such preparation you worry about everything from your health, the bike, the course, the logistics, your chase... this is a full team effort from everybody so you can imagine the stress balls from everybody you come in contact with Big Balls. Fortunately our team consists of people that have been around a lot of racing and thus seems that we control the stress through proper preparation and therefore we get to enjoy and after all we are supposed to be having fun! Speaking of fun most race teams and chase will agree that the pre-run time you spend wether 1 or 2 weeks is one of the reasons we love the Baja 1000 and for me this was also the case with old friends coming down to ride with and tell stories of the days adventure although getting stuck out in the dark is never fun at the time but you eventually make it in and look back and say man that was fun.

The race this year was a loop starting and finishing in Ensenada and as the case with a loop race the Score crew tries to make it as difficult as possible and they did their job! Whichever the task everybody has the same course to deal with so just get your head around it and get-er-done without drama or breaking the bike. Our bike was brand new by KTM of course 450XCF from All American and Stefano had it dialed in with help from Mike Crow suspension, Baja Designs, Ricky Stator and the rest of the goodies that go into a 1000 race machine. Our race plan consisted of taking advantage of every body's skill set Jano Montoya loves the whoops thank god, Francisco (Pancho) Septien lives in Ensenada and knows it like his back yard as goes the same for Gerardo (Nino) Rojas living 200K south along the Pacific and for me the south end no mans land was my rock pile to figure out.

Ready Set Race! We did our work attended the drivers meeting got the new cumbersome Score tracking safety devise 'Stella' mounted up had our race plans now execute! Our class was stacked with many fast experienced riders with Collie Potters 400X team, the 455X Mike Johnson crew wanting that championship badly and Chad Thornton's 422X looking to play spoiler.

As the green flag dropped its almost a relief to be doing what we came to do but with only the live tracking to watch for updates it can be frustrating. Yes we had another new system that everybody was counting on to see the progress but once again right from the start it was not showing all the bikes including the 455x which was never out of our dust or us eating theirs. With Pancho on the bike from the start we were confident he would pass it off to Nino without issues and hopefully up front or close and that was the case 422X 404x 455x!! Nino on the bike now and down the coast they came towards me @ mile 225 patiently waiting and stretching out with Andrew and Jae getting my final prep and race brief.
As Nino came roaring in our exchange we changed tire and filter as the 455X came roaring by us then the 422 all within 30 seconds of each other! oh boy it was going to be a long battle. My section was no mans land out into the rock piles of places unknown for a 200 mile rip but first was the sand whoop section from the coast up the El Rosario arroyo this was not my favorite and it caught me being cautious as Score had 6 VCP's in a few miles. VCP?? these are virtual check points or beacons that are placed in corners of the course that are electronically tracked by the device on the bike and must be hit or you will receive a 10 min penalty and thats no bueno. This year the course had 125 VCP so plenty of opportunity to miss one and blow your whole race or at least set you back a place or 2 which everybody knows and has to respect. I had a good placement of these as I was running Lead Nav for pre-running but when I hit my line and knew I needed to hit one but the new tracker did not beep at me so slam on the binders and did an quick donut and BEEP ya baby lets truck on! thank you Stella.

As the miles of rocks when the pits came and the whole crew was spot on with our plan for gas and a quick check of the bike 1 pit 2 pit 3 pit bang! sweet. As a old dude racing the Baja 1000 I tell myself to always just race your race don't be a fool! don't get caught up in the excitement of thousands of race crazy fans, keep your vision of passing the bike to your team mate, and never ever think about anything except the present moment! Rocks Oh Nasty Stick Rut Silt Edge of Death What French Bicycles Packed to  the hilt right in the middle of the nastiest Rock Pile you shitting me!

At race mile 365 my last pit I was happy to see our remote savoir and friend pOncho to give me a quick drink and supportive words for the rip in more Fricking#% rocks! I told him man I am tried and he said ya go get it! Ya man. This section was actually a lot of fun, the course flowed, your having a blast and scenery here was unbelievable just like Catavina but in the middle of nowhere, thanks Score Crew Roger, this is why I do what I do, mom. Ok thats done Mas piedra's and yes that beautiful day its almost gone the afternoon sun was right in my grill and well more rocks and Wholly Shit that 1A Super JR Quad comes ripping by me with a quick nod and see ya. I was glad to see the the crowds / film crews / silt clouds of race fans watching all the Trucks /Cars heading outbound / but most importantly My 404X Team mates awaiting me.

Get me off this pony almost 5 hours I was ready! no get off's no killed motor bike perfect, lights on, new tire, another silt filled filter change Go Nino Go! off he blasted into the early dusk. Jae always wants to be where i get off the bike and she didn't disappoint excited with live FB feed and a cold electrolyte we celebrated with the crew and Caputo and Jano blasted off to the next pit trying to chase down the front leaders that we had to chase down by 20 min. Though the crazy route, back up the coast these are all ag areas that Nino well knows and with all the crazy crazy crowds of these towns spread along Hwy 1 all I can say is glad I wasn't have to deal with these congested areas at race speed!

When Jano got on the bike for the 1st time he was more than ready and at mile 485 Nino in for another perfect pit. Jano off and blasting to the other side of the course we were down 12 min now and from the depths of a few accidents here came Dave Glass with the 400X team wow we all say its a long race and anything can happen. Jano was up for the task except it got cold 37 what yep well that's better than the 500 with temps of 120 Baja, got to love it!
About this point our live tracker took dump yes still tracking with the Score officials but just not the one everybody watches and starts calling what happened bike down?? rider down?? its the other side of the mountains so we dont know? The chase crew hauling ass doing the job at task and Pancho has a full support and family waiting over there no word until Jano was off the bike and no worries everything was perfect. All except the race was still as close as it can be 4 teams now within gleaming the prize in sight! Mile 700ish we were all so close our pit crew ran to wrong bike of 422 in the dust cloud of 3 teams trying to get the jump on the dust in the middle of the night well this was time for Pancho to crack the hammer and get those Baja Designs lights seeing clear trail and when Jano got the bike with 40 miles to go we had a 4 min lead. The last stretch back into Ensenada is a tricky one with so many people camped everywhere with there blazing camp fires for a good dose of distraction but Jano did his own blazing and brought the bike to the finish line where we all greeted him with the shower of champagne for the win and new 40 pro champions! Wow what a race as always but no problems no crashes everybody healthy and no penalty's for the official result!!!

We all were quite happy and feeling proud so of course we had to relish the moment with plenty of cerveza's while telling our stories of the day. A big thank you to our awesome chase team for this task can't be done without all 20 of you. Thanks to Jano for making all this happen and being the best team captain, Pancho and Nino always fast as the wind and of course our wives who let us carry on like school boys in this crazy sport we all put so much into.

That's a Braaap on the season.

As our season goes this one lined up for plenty of excitement with guys coming from all over the world AussieSerb's, Panama Israelis', South Africans, East/West Gringo's and Bulldogs oh my!

You know things will be interesting when the group shows up with an extra German!

The Hammer ready to roll!

Tyler is a big man that never quit giggling like a school girl.

Last late summer we saw another wet one here and the 13 inches of rain turned Baja Sur into something looking like Jungle once more. This makes for a great riding season but also means my work is never done to prepare, especially as one of the first groups only wants to ride black diamond single track and stay right here in Los Barriles just because Its that great! (Quote) I am not advocating to only stay here but it is certainly a great place to live and start an adventure from. 3 days to 8 days can take you a long way here in Baja and we love the diversity all over Baja!

Just too beautiful not to pose.

Strangers before, not now!

Time for !

After a couple years we get to know each other.

A guaranteed smile.

Father/Sons are always cool to see having fun together.

Yes, we get this much rain, and this much fun!

These Crazies push me each year.

Yes I know it is September and we are getting the much needed rains, but this is a recap blog not to confuse everybody thinking that I am writing about this upcoming season.
As our company goes, we offer what we call custom trips and what this means to us is that we try to fit the best Baja experience for your days off. How many days riding can the group handle and of course route planning for the group skill level, plus the other spectacular activities we offer. Most groups want to have an  experience of local Mexicana, with amazing fresh comida each day & comrade'. Almost every group last season wanted something a little different and I thank you for trusting us to make it happen, it makes it fun and challenging for sure, but we love it as much as you do.

Big smiles just before the big day!

Yes this job can make you go nuts.

Still not sure what they were thinking when they decided to build, but glad they did.

Not every day goes as planned

Chilquilen preforming for his new friends.

Sea of Cortez delivers fun and beauty.

We are very lucky getting the privilege to meet all walks of life and I mean we never know what to expect but one thing I have come to learn is that everybody that rides dirt bikes and has the desire to explore new countries and new culture's are pretty darn cool!

Mongol and his 2x day Turkish coffee! yes he packed this kit 1000 miles

These South African's keep returning for more Baja

The crazy Bulldogs have a peaceful moment (the only one)

Check out our episode of DESTINATION BAJA SUR

I wish that I was better at blogging because each trip, each adventure, each group deserves a story written about what happened or what didn't happen here in Baja. I can tell you that we have stories upon stories with each day bringing new one's and really we have to be prepared for all but the best ones are finishing a trip and everybody has ear to ear smiles with their own stories to go home with.

Joe and crew living the dream.

Washington guys know how to bush wack.

No or little experience but after 3 days these guys were ripping.

Friends of 35 years I am sure we will see each other more often now.

This last season we started with 9 bikes and by the end we had 14 KTM Baja ready bikes so from the looks of the shop I guess the last season was pretty good. Oh wait, they still all need the tender love that Baja Sur dishes out so more of everything going on behind the scenes to ready ourself for the upcoming season.

Its true Aussies have more fun!!!

Jalen couldn't have found a better way to have a Bachelor party.

Wether you came down by yourself to meet up with complete strangers or came with lifelong bud's to live another great adventure we thank you in trusting us with your dream. We look forward to another great season with returning groups and of course meeting new friends and showing them an adventure of a life time.
Muchos Gracias to all.

Baja Beast ! 500

Another Score Baja 500 Not! This bastard was just lying and waiting just like the Summit which we have not seen in years but the beast this year hasn't been seen maybe ever!

However the challenge we all approach a race with the same confidence that a racer has to have or the beast will eat your lunch before you get to race day. When the course map was announced I knew with out talking to the team I would get my fav section the Summit! yes every time I am the oldest dude on many different teams over the years but always that F*#%@ng rock mountain. Its all good and you just embrace it and get prepared for the dance. The Cantina team was in great shape with Jano, Pancho, and Nino all riding alot these days and wanting to give good opportunity to bounce back from the 250 where the win was giving back due to a penalty so we had confidence and determination to better this race.

As my professional chase team Jae, Andretti and I traveled north after winding down our season we heard rumors of weather for the race as in rain and maybe snow in the mountains Ha. This rumor fell to hell literally when we came to reality of a heat wave and yes it came. Each day the temps rose by 10 degrees and my last day of pre-running out to the dry lake Saldanda where Baja Pits had the usual pre-run support and hydration stop Mucho Gracias its a much needed stop especially at 110 degrees.

Well we all settled into Ensenada and the cool Pacific @ 65 but that beast on the other side of the mountains was just waking up as we did the contingency ritual awaiting the race the following morning. Pancho in usual fashion started out like a madman passing 12 guys making their way out of Ensenada up to the 100 mile mark passing the bike to me in 1st place in our class but the competitors where in hot pursuit close behind.

I took off for the rock pile on our new KTM 450XCF as I twisted the grip on this stead for the first time!. I don't recommend this even though I ride a lot of KTM 450's but to jump on a bike for the first miles shouldn't be during the BAJA 500.

As I settled in for my rip I headed straight into the rocks and begin to work up a sweat and then you grab as million times before for the sip of cold water and CRAP 1 suck not 2 suck not 3 suck F#@! nada, I pulled on the hose but no water. Did I mention yet waking the beast! as you crest the summit it is a awesome view down into the east side and the sea of cortez off in the distance but of course there was no time for pictures now as the down hill side of the summit has somehow gotten even worse yes just straight enduro cross sections of rock, big, small, rollers you name it that rock is up there. The good feeling of making it off the mountain was quickly waned by the excessive heat blasting you like a propane fired heater.

When I hit my first Baja Pits I yelled for AGUA and as you see quite often when you are the first or second racer for these great crews they look a little stunned and that's what I saw here as I grabbed a 1/2 small bottle of water and tried to hit my mouth the best I could and off I had to roar. I just got passed and that's not cool in my own mind even though its 115 and I am fricken thirsty but hey only 70 more miles for my leg to the famous Borego pits. As fast as the adrenaline will push a guy you head into the flats of Salada dry lake bed I finally am able to take a look up and see what I was afraid of! the beast was awake and staring me straight on from across the dry lake bed temps shot up 120 to 130 depending on whose burnt up thermometer you were reading! It was so stupid hot that I wasn't even sweating! I rolled into the Salada pits and my team mate Nino was waiting with a bottle of life! I drank as much as I could stomach and into the sandy whoops and yes more nasty rocks. My physical condition was in strain shortly after the pits and I found myself reverting back to when I started racing and Hydration Paks were non existent and just push through at my pace and make it end pass this bad motorscooter to my team mate. The last 7 miles of my section are indescribable lets just say Not Fun and I don't think anybody racing this would disagree but hey that last jump is always fun as you see your team waiting and a much needed couple gallons of water to get back to normal hopefully!

This year the course was mostly on the east side so that woken beast did not nor would not go away all day yes steady 117 degree's can you say survival mode! Jano took the bike from me and crushed the San Felipe whoops and passed our competitors and we were back in 1st place Hot Dam! Wait hold the cheers and if still reading this never make the mistake of not attending the rider/driver meeting the night before as we did this and did not get word that there had been a course change and thus Jano missed our pit and had to wait for gas as he watched the same guys he worked his ass off to pass ride on by with proper pit planning. Back to 3rd or 4th Jano mad as a hornet back to it and making time lost to our stupidity. Pancho was back on for a second leg and making time we moved up to third as he rolled into mile 360 beat down from the heat with the rest of the competitors all looking severely whipped from this crazy race we all desire and must show respect for.

Nino had played it smart and kept himself in A/C for most of the day and showed his fresh stuff and put a awesome ride to catch pass and move us into 2nd close behind 1st and by the time he passed the bike to Jano for the last 25 miles we were in control of 1st place and Jano brought it to the finish line holding off our competitors by a few minutes.

Now we can all cheer and pop a cold cerveza as the whole Cantina Racing team did a great job and now we are tied for 1st in points and ready for the next race in Sept then ready ourselves for the 1000 and a hopeful championship run.
